As we step into International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, the theme; “Collectively, we can Accelerate Action for Gender Equality” resonates deeply with the remarkable women we are honoring today. These are women who have not only shattered barriers but are leading the charge for gender equality and empowerment across Africa. Through their groundbreaking work in business, finance, and logistics they embody the collective strength that accelerates change.

Each of these extraordinary leaders has dedicated their lives to uplifting others, pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and paving the way for future generations of women to thrive. We celebrate Roberta Annan, Ifedayo Durosinmi-Etti, and Captain Londy Ngcobo – three African women whose leadership, vision, and tireless dedication to progress exemplify how we can collectively accelerate action for gender equality.

Roberta Annan:

A force to be reckoned with, Roberta Annan is a woman who has championed the cause of empowerment and sustainable development across Africa. As the founder of Annan Capital and the Africa Fashion Foundation, Roberta has carved out a space for herself as an impact investor and a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). But her story is much more than just accolades and titles. It is the story of a woman who has dedicated her career to opening doors for African women and youth, providing opportunities for growth and advancement in both the fashion and entrepreneurial sectors.

Through her groundbreaking projects like the Impact Fund for African Creatives (IFFAC), Roberta is helping reshape the African creative economy, raising funds and providing the much-needed financial backbone to small and medium-sized enterprises. Her commitment to elevating the continent’s creative industry is unmatched, as IFFAC continues to invest in African talent and bring world-class opportunities to the forefront.

Ifedayo Durosinmi-Etti:

Ifedayo Durosinmi-Etti, a young entrepreneur, author, and global leader, is leading the charge in the financial empowerment of African women. As the CEO and founder of Herconomy, a fintech platform dedicated to providing women with the tools they need to build wealth, Ifedayo is transforming the financial landscape for women across the continent. Through Herconomy, she has created a community-driven platform that not only offers financial education but also connects women with high-yield savings accounts and discounts on women-centric services.

Her accomplishments are numerous. A Mandela Washington Fellow and a Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum, Ifedayo’s work has earned her recognition as one of the “100 Most Influential Young Africans” by Advance Media. She has become a beacon of hope for young women looking to secure their financial future and a leading advocate for gender equality and youth employment across Africa.

Captain Londy Ngcobo:

Breaking barriers in an industry traditionally dominated by men, Captain Londy Ngcobo stands as a testament to perseverance and vision. With over 15 years of experience, Captain Ngcobo is advancing Africa’s ocean economy, a journey that began in Durban, South Africa. Today, she is one of the leading figures in maritime logistics and an advocate for gender equality in the sector.

Her leadership in advancing the ocean economy and her continued push for more women to enter and thrive in this field is reshaping the landscape for African women in traditionally male-dominated industries. Captain Ngcobo’s legacy continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of African women to pursue careers in areas once thought to be beyond their reach.

These women, among many others, are the embodiment of the theme “Collectively, we can Accelerate Action for gender equality.” By pushing boundaries, breaking glass ceilings, and leading with purpose, they prove that gender equality is not just a goal, but a movement that requires unity, collaboration, and above all, relentless determination. Today, we celebrate them, and as we move forward, we are reminded of the collective power of women to shape a future of equality, opportunity, and growth for all.
